Volunteer Center

In September 2005, CAISM made official the Volunteer Center “Prof. Dr. Eduardo Lane” which aims to create conditions for community involvement in activities related to hospital operation and service to users.

The Nucleus has as an Honorary Volunteer Nelly Bolliger Lane, widow of the late professor emeritus. It currently develops activities with around 25 volunteers who produce handicrafts for sale and convert all profits to the benefit of CAISM patients, as well as make layettes and organize the donations received.

An alert from experts is drawing the attention of the scientific community, due to the difficulties in accessing contraceptive methods, during the COVID-19 pandemic period. The article, which raises the question, was published in The European Journal of Contraception and Reproductive Health Care , authored by Dr. Luis Bahamondes, coordinator of the INCT Hormona Center – State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), and Dr. Maria Y. Makuch. The “ Family planning: an essential health activity in the pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 ” shows the impact on the daily life of the population, in various areas of health, which are not considered essential services, such as the distribution of contraceptives. According to Dr. Luis Bahamondes, unplanned pregnancy can cause serious public health problems, including lack of resources for prenatal care, unsafe abortions, pregnancy complications and an increase in maternal and infant morbidity and mortality.

“What can we do in terms of contraception provision as many medical clinics and hospitals are facing extremely high demands and challenges to care for people with COVID-19? It is necessary to recognize the importance of family planning in this special moment”, emphasizes the specialist.

With this in mind, Dr. Ilza Monteiro created the Group of volunteer doctors to assist women at the Family Planning Ambulatory, which takes place in partnership with CEMICAMP, aiming to reduce the negative impact of the pandemic on women’s contraception and sexual reproductive health. Physicians and family planning professionals provide appointments for prescribing and evaluating contraception for women who seek the service.
